Soteria
This project was a concept for one user. The focus was to identify a person who had a challenging and impactful job in their community—the project aimed to understand all the connecting issues for this expert and build a solution.
Soterias concept is a use case based on research coming from New Smyrna Beach in Florida. Lifeguards have the challenging job of scanning for any issues on the beach. Lifeguards are required to monitor 1.8 miles of populated beach. Problems can arise at any time, with an average of 1-3 rescues per day, not counting animal attacks. Lifeguards are given an emergency radio and tasked to direct the beach and keep a sharp eye for any distress.
A college swim athlete who's been involved with the water since she was eight years old. May was sixteen years old when she took on her first job as a lifeguard. May understood that this job was essential to the citizens on the beach, and it was on her to ensure their leisure was safe. May took pride in working as a lifeguard daily because May always wanted to ensure the beach was safe.

From research, the team and I figured out that May could play different roles depending on her assigned job. The jobs identified for the beach are dispatch, lifeguard tower, and guard tower.
Each role was pivotal in ensuring the beach ran smoothly, creating a unique ecosystem of relaying information where dispatch and the lifeguard tower would communicate to the guard tower so the guards could chart how the beach was proceeding.
